About St. Clair Shores

Saint Clair Shores has many beautiful parks along its shoreline and within its large neighborhoods. A city marina, located behind the city hall, is available for boaters and is situated just outside the city pool which is available for residents. The city once had a small amusement park named Jefferson Beach. After the roller coaster burned down, the lake front became popular for boat storage. Now Jefferson Beach Marina is the largest marina in the state, soon to be home of One Water Place, a large, upscale high rise, retail and condominium complex.
Located in Macomb County in southeastern Michigan, St. Clair Shores is approximately 13 miles northeast of downtown Detroit. The total area of the city is 14.2 miles, with over 19% of it's area made up of water. The city, heavily populated by boaters, has 14 miles of canals.
The area was home to French settlers as early as 1710 when it was call "L'anse Creuse" (which means "deep bay"). L'anse Creuse was also the name of the stop on the old interurban railroad off of Jefferson Avenue near 9 Mile Road.
Some of the settling families included Couchez, Frazho, Fresard, Maison, Trombley, and
Vernier. A couple notable former residents include actor Dave Coulier and rapper Eminem (aka Marshall Mathers). Eminem worked as a short order cook at Gilbert's Lodge, located on Harper Avenue between 8 Mile Road and 9 Mile Road, from 1996 to 1998.
St. Clair Shores was once recognized as the largest village in the United States! Daniel
N. Davis was the first president of the village. It was given this name because of its location
on the shores of Lake Saint Clair. It was incorporated as a city in 1950-51.
The school districts in St. Clair Shores are South Lake, Lakeview and Lake Shore, each with a high school of the same name. Some private schools include St. Joan of Arc, St. Germaine and St. Isaac Jogues.
